Aesthetic Study of The Painting Style of Jelekong Art Village
Abstract
This research aims to formulate the aesthetic characteristics and painting style of the Jelekong art village in Baleendah District, Bandung Regency, West Java, and to examine how commercial orientation and the inheritance of the painting tradition shape visual uniformity among its painters. Jelekong has a painting tradition passed down from generation to generation that serves as a livelihood for some of its residents. This qualitative study applies an aesthetic approach (form, content, and presentation) combined with an analysis of the elements and principles of fine art, using observation, interviews, and a survey of paintings sold online. The results show that Jelekong paintings are dominated by a romanticism–Mooi Indie style adapted with local characteristics, namely imaginary landscapes, the sponge technique, and rapid production. Visual uniformity is formed through informal learning based on observation and imitation as well as market-driven orientation. Commercial orientation does not simply eliminate artistic value, but shifts the function and context of appreciation of the paintings from a means of expression to a market product, while repetitive production patterns produce a distinctive visual character in the Jelekong painting style.
