VIRAL: Journal of Visual Arts Practice and Literacy is an academic journal focusing on practice and literacy in fine arts and applied arts. Practice and literacy are like two sides of the same coin. Practice without literacy can become a mere technical skill without profound meaning. Conversely, literacy without practice can become knowledge disconnected from the real experience of creating art.
This journal publishes original scholarly works, providing a platform for academics, practitioners, and researchers to share insights into the creative process, artistic methodologies, and critical understanding of the visual arts. Its main goal is to bridge the gap between theory and practice, while promoting a deeper understanding of the role of art in contemporary society.
Often manifesting as art, visual innovation aims to create more effective representations. Visual literacy is essential to comprehending and utilizing these creations fully. This interplay of innovation and literacy forms a cyclical process, empowering individuals to engage more profoundly with their visual environment.
The style guide for VIRAL refers to two types of writing: Practice-led Research (Prefactum, art practice) and Practice-based Research (Postfactum, critical studies and art literacy).
This journal accepts a variety of manuscripts, from research articles, critical curatorial essays, and case studies, to literature reviews and book reviews. We encourage contributors to combine theoretical and practical approaches to enrich the discourse within the visual arts discipline.
The journal is published twice a year, in March and September
