Hornbills in Artwear: Transforming Borneo's Iconic Bird into Contemporary Fashion
Abstract
This study explores the transformation of the iconic Bornean bird of Borneo into contemporary art, specifically artwear designed for the Jember Fashion Carnival (JFC). Employing qualitative visual analysis, this research deconstructs the hornbill’s distinctive forms—such as its characteristic beak and wing shapes—and recontextualizes them as visual elements in artwear. This process utilizes a design thinking approach to create innovative and creative artwear that aligns with JFC’s curation. The findings reveal that integrating the hornbill’s characteristics into artwear not only strengthens Borneo’s symbolic narrative but also enriches the visual vocabulary of contemporary Indonesian carnival design. This research contributes to the discourse on interdisciplinary design practices and offers a model for translating cultural icon forms into fashion in the context of a world-class carnival
